Mean Time to Acknowledge, or MTTA, is the average time between an incident or alert being created and a responsible person acknowledging it.

MTTA can show whether notifications reach the right team, whether ownership is clear, and whether the intake process works. It does not show how quickly the issue is investigated or resolved.

Teams should define the metric consistently, including:

  • Which event starts the clock
  • What counts as acknowledgement
  • Which alerts or incidents are included
  • How business hours, duplicates, and reassignment are handled

Reducing MTTA is useful when reports wait in queues. It should be paired with quality measures so teams do not acknowledge quickly without taking meaningful ownership.

Compare it with MTTA vs MTTR: which metric should you improve first?.
